Bob Costas, one of television’s most accomplished broadcasters, is a native of Queens, New York and grew up on Long Island. He attended Syracuse University, where he majored in Communications. His professional career began at WSYR-TV and Radio in 1973 while studying at Syracuse. At age twenty-two, Bob landed a job at KMOX Radio in St. Louis, Missouri, one of America’s most prominent radio stations. He broadcasted a wide variety of live play-by-play and studio programs from 1974-1981. One of his primary assignments during this time was announcing the play-by-play for the ABA’s Spirits of St. Louis. He was also the radio voice of the University of Missouri Basketball Team. A 26-year veteran of NBC Sports, Bob Costas joined the network’s sports division in 1979. Since then, he has hosted seven Olympics and has been prominently involved in virtually every major sports event, including numerous World Series, Super Bowl and NBA Finals broadcasts. His most recent Olympics assignment was serving as prime time host for the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy. With the advent of “Football Night In America,” Bob Costas added another chapter to his long and diverse career in sports television, as the host of NBC’s Sunday night NFL broadcast. He joined HBO Sports in February 2001 and launched the critically praised and Emmy Award-Winning show “On The Record With Bob Costas,” subsequently re-named “Costas Now.” This show established itself as one of network television’s most respected programs for its compelling mix of interviews, commentary and opinion. In September 2002, Costas joined Chris Carter, Chris Collinsworth and Dan Marino as co-host of HBO’s award-winning football program “Inside The NFL.” Bob is perhaps most identified with his coverage of the Olympics and Major League Baseball. His reputation within baseball is long standing, dating to NBC’s “Game of the Week.” Costas’ frequent and passionate commentary about the game’s history, appeal, and ongoing problems, has earned him the respect and admiration of millions of fans. His book, “Fair Ball, A Fan’s Case For Baseball,” earned excellent reviews, remained on the New York Times bestseller list for several weeks, and influenced the ongoing discussion concerning the game’s direction. Costas has won nineteen Emmy Awards and has been honored as Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association an unprecedented eight times. |
